Learning to Understand Russian News

Can you already speak, read and understand basic Russian? Do you like finding out interesting facts about Russia? Do you enjoy reading and listening to the news? Would you like to understand the news in Russian better?
If you answered “yes” to any of the questions above, then this book will be a great help to you.

You will discover:

- which websites provide news from Russia and how to find them
- what the Russian President does
- what people talk about on Russian TV
- how to talk about the news in your country.

You will read, listen to and watch the news, including items on politics, culture and sport, and you will learn to understand the weather forecast. Last but not least, you will start using the Internet in Russian.

This textbook is designed for students aged 12+ who are learning Russian as a foreign language at a basic level (CEFR A2-B1). It aims to advance students' reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. It provides lexical and grammar content from authentic printed, audio and video texts.

There are 7 themes covered in the textbook, including: "Mass Media", "Visits", "Negotiations and Meetings", "Congratulations, Awards and Condolences", "Culture", "Sport", and "Weather and Natural Disasters".

The book offers various types of exercises:
Reading practice is designed to develop students’ reading skills and suggests working with authentic printed texts. Journalistic practice focuses on writing essays.
Reading and Watching the News provides students with a printed text as well as a video text on the same theme.
The chapter Discussing news at the end of the book suggests additional interesting articles which haven't been included in the main contents.

Students can listen to audio materials and watch video segments using QR codes. The book includes answer keys to all vocabulary, grammar and listening tasks as well as the scripts for the audio texts.

Creative Writing

This book is divided into themes, and provides sample texts and miscellaneous tasks to develop and practise students' writing skills in the form of a monologue and a dialogue. There are also creative tasks included in the book, and students can evaluate the texts they have created through the assessment system the book offers. The audio materials are available to listen to or to download through QR-codes.
