 Alfredo Bryce Echenique

Alfredo Bryce Echenique (born February 19, 1939) is a Peruvian writer born in Lima. He has written several books and short stories. Bryce studied law at the National University of San Marcos until 1964. His literary interest, however, prevailed and like many other Latin American authors of the boom period (1960s-1970s) he ended up in Paris thanks to a grant from the French government. At the Sorbonne he studied classics and modern French literature and then taught at various French schools and universities. His first book Huerto Cerrado was published in 1968 followed by his first novel, Un Mundo para Julius, published to great critical acclaim. This first novel became a classic in Latin American literature and marked the start of a prolific literary career for its author in which he has until today written nearly twenty novels and numerous stories, essays, memoirs, articles and chronicles. Although in geographical terms and in his close proximity to other Latin American authors of the boom generation he is considered part of it, the author himself keeps a conscious distance. Critics have pointed out that his style, unlike that of many of his fellow writers, is more ironic rather than magic realist.
