Once, in a far-off land: language learning via literature

8th September 2021 - CIOL Gloucestershire Network on Zoom - 16:00-17:00

Join the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) Gloucestershire Network on Zoom for a talk about how reading literature is a wonderful way to learn other languages and gain an insight into different cultures.

Literary translator Ruth Ahmedzai-Kemp and Hollie Cottrell from bookseller European Schoolbooks will talk about how reading in translation and reading in other languages has helped them in their language learning journeys and in their careers.

Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp translates literature from Arabic, German and Russian into English. Her published translations include fiction, nonfiction and children's books from Germany, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine, Russia, Switzerland and Syria. Her work has been shortlisted for the Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize, the Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize and the GLLI Translated YA Prize. Ruth is co-editor of World Kid Lit blog, a community project that champions literature for young people in translation, and coordinator of the annual event, #WorldKidLitMonth in September.

Hollie Cottrell is a Marketing Assistant at European Schoolbooks Ltd., the UK’s leading specialist supplier of European language-learning resources and literature. Her love of languages was sparked at an early age, having grown up in Wales, where she studied Welsh (though admittedly not to any fluency!), French, German, and a little Spanish to varying degrees. She graduated in German and Italian in 2013 and now uses Italian on a daily basis, both at work and at home.

Celebrating #WorldKidLitMonth this September, and European Schoolbooks' month-long celebration of children’s books in other languages, the speakers will discuss children’s literature, Ruth as a translator and co-ordinator of the World Kid Lit blog, and Hollie from a bookseller’s perspective.

There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask the speakers questions.

Register via Eventbrite.
