Jornada de formación especialmente dedicada a profesores de primaria

25th April 2019 - The European Bookshop - 19:00-20:30

UK Lingua 2019

27th April to 28th April 2019 - Chemistry Department, Durham University, Lower Mountjoy, South Road, Durham DH1 3LE.

CONFERENCE THEME : Culture in the Language Classroom

The fourth UK LINGUA Colloquium will take place on Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th April 2019 at Durham University. Aimed at MFL and ESL teachers and researchers, UK LINGUA is a forum for the exchange of ideas, theories and practices, enhancing scholarship and teaching excellence in this field.

The focus of UK Lingua 2019 will be Culture in the Language Classroom. This is understood in the widest sense and at all levels of instruction (primary, secondary, higher education, for all levels of ability). We do not limit it to accessing ‘high’ culture but include the exploration of everyday life, contemporary lifestyles, shallow and deep culture, pragmatics and CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning).

Current research shows that younger learners enjoy learning about how people live in other places, and that older students need to acquire cultural as well as linguistic proficiency to make the most of their language learning. Cultural instruction is ‘essential to any depth of understanding of the language, to the motivation and attitude of the student’ (Merrill Valdes, 1999: viii).

Some refer to culture as the ‘fifth skill’ in language learning, powerful but loosely defined, and within the subject content of the National Curriculum for all ages there is a cultural element, also loosely defined.

So, what exactly do we mean by culture and by the teaching of cultural content? How do we prevent ourselves from thinking in terms of stereotypes, and overcome this way of thinking in our students? Can we really teach a language without taking into account the cultural aspects of the places where that language is spoken?

European Schoolbooks Ltd will be attending the conference with a wide range of materials in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish and will be offering a 10% discount on orders placed during the event.
