Osho
Born Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, Osho was born in India on December 11, 1931 and became a contemporary Indian guru who touched the lives of many people all over the world with his discourses. Osho graduated from the University of Sagar with a first class degree in philosophy and was a professor of philosophy for nine years at the University of Jabalpur. During his time as a professor he opened his first meditation centre and named his movement the "Life Awakening Movement". In 1966 he resigned as professor to set up an ashram in Bombay and in 1974 he established an ashram in Poona. He moved to the U.S. in 1981, where he established a commune which was surrounded with controversy from day one - many believed this 65,000 acre "city" with its 3,000 residents was set up as a fascist concentration camp. Osho and his followers were constantly accused of crimes and he was deported from the U.S. in 1986 for violations of immigration law. He returned to Poona where he died four years later in 1990. Osho has sold over 15 million copies of his books, which have been translated into over 80 languages. Using his wit and wisdom, his books give an insight into a wide-range of spiritual and philosophical traditions such as meditation, yoga, love, sex and enlightenment.
